Caravane Earth
Pop-up Art Village in Desert of Qatar
The Caravane Art Village was conceived as a living experiment in nomadic architecture, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation to create portable, hand-built structures that serve as spaces for culture, craft, and community.
Each structure was designed to be assembled and disassembled by hand, requiring no heavy machinery and utilizing materials sourced gently from nature. The goal was to develop an architectural language that is mobile, adaptable, and deeply rooted in vernacular wisdom, allowing architecture to exist as a fluid, evolving practice rather than a static imposition on the landscape.
Materials & Construction
The Caravane Earth Pop-Up Art Village was a 300-unit settlement designed to showcase a sustainable, modular approach to architecture, integrating bamboo and textile-based structures rooted in vernacular traditions. Across 13+ typologies, including a children’s workshop, theater, guest houses, and gathering spaces, the village employed a reciprocal frame structural system, first prototyped in the Majlis pavilion, allowing for lightweight, transportable, and self-supporting buildings. Each unit combined handcrafted bamboo frameworks with woven textiles, blending artisanal craftsmanship with contemporary prefabrication techniques. The project redefined temporary architecture, proving that mobile, climate-responsive structures could serve as both functional spaces and cultural expressions, fostering community, creativity, and environmental consciousness.
